Glee and other stuff
Feb. 23rd, 2012 07:50 pmGlee 3x14: On My Way (Trigger warning for suicide ideation, depression)
As much as this week's Glee ep has important issues that were raised, they were handled terribly. Also, I seriously doubt the reason why Glee raised these issues was because they wanted to be sensitive and raise awareness about it. More likely it is due to the fact that they need a shocking wnter finale, and they felt that suicide and depression is shocking. UGH.
Here are reasons why the ep is terrible:
On Depression (and understanding it)
Also, Kurt and Quinn dismissing each other is extremely inappropriate, but also very much teenager behaviour. Now, if only I can be certain that the audience doesn't buy into either one of their arguments. Quinn seems to have never experienced suicide ideation, and therefore dismisses it so casually when it is a real issue. Kurt treats Quinn's teenage pregnancy and post partum depression as a "bad hair dye job" is also extremely inappropriate, as the issues that she has to live with is also very real.
There is just way too many stereotypes in this episode, and these stereotypes are utterly false and misleading.
Things that the episode could have done:
That is of course, not to say that I didn't have things I enjoyed in the ep, such as Blaine's dream of marriage equality, and Kurt's aspiration for his dad. Love Blaine breaking down when he sings Cough Syrup.
Also, Max Adler's thoughtful response in regards to the character of David Karofsky? Brilliant.
Matt Bomer is going to take an appearance in the next ep, so yes, I will be watching. And I do like Blaine and Kurt too much to stop watching.
Other stuff
In one sentence, describing what I hate about rape culture: here
Also, simply living my college student life aka STUDYING, and planning for a summer in the U.S.

Things that the episode could have done:
- Have a warning card/trigger warning at the opening at the episode - It makes me so mad that there was no warning for the first ten minutes of the episode. People can get triggered by this shit and it is extremely irresponsible of the producers and the network not to put a warning card for the ep, especially when the scenes are so graphic and visceral. And to put one for the episode on sex, when it wasn't even graphic then.
- Show that the aftermath of suicide and dealing with depression is not a once off thing - One happy vision of the future is not the solution to getting out of depression. This is as bad as the "Think happy thoughts" solution. It is so messed up, that there is no proper medical procedure that can be easily followed in such situations. All they needed was a throwaway line about how Dave would be seeing a regular therapist to show that it is a process.
