Travelling
Dec. 30th, 2011 10:57 pmWhen I read RM, she is so understated in her writing style that I just want to know more. Even when she is wrangling with difficult concepts, there is still so much left unsaid sometimes.
Recently, I have been reading what she writes about home and belonging, and I only have three modes when I travel. Native, tourist with native and tourist.
This means that I can either go all out and do only tourist things in short bursts in various cities, walk in a city with a native of the city, or just be native and live as if I have lived there all my life. I definitely can't do the thing where I am familiar with the city, and still a tourist. Trying to pass as native but acting as a tourist, it really doesn't work for me.
I am either detached (tourist), attached by proxy (tourist with a native), or attached (native).
So, just a PSA to people who may travel with me in the future, or just a reminder to myself, I guess.
